Abstract
Objective: To assess the potential and significance of computed tomography colonography (CTC) for the postoperative follow-up of colorectal carcinoma patients.
Materials and methods: We reviewed CT colonographies of consecutive 69 patients operated for colorectal cancer, with no clinical and laboratory evidence of recurrence. All CTC findings were verified histologically after colonoscopy, surgery or with positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).
Results: Polyps with a high degree dysplasia were observed in 6% of the cases. The extraluminal recurrences were 7% and those in the region of anastomosis - 3%. In 12 patients (18%), the CTC detected extracolonic metastases - in the liver, lungs and peritoneum.
Conclusion: The i.v. contrast-enhanced CTC is a relevant method for postoperative follow-up of colorectal carcinoma patients because of the possibility of simultaneous detection of distant metastases, of metachronous lesions and local recurrences, both outside and inside the lumen of the colon.
