Abstract
One of the main reasons for renal insufficiency in patients diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome is the development of superimposed crescentic glomerulonephritis. The superimposed crescentic glomerulonephritis is a very rare complication observed mainly in patients with membranous nephropathy. In 1974, Klassen et al. reported for the first time an acute renal failure, observed in a patient with membranous glomerulonephritis. In most cases, different types of ANCA antibodies or ABM antibodies may be observed in the course of diagnosing, although the absence of such antibodies is also possible. The crescentic glomerulonephritis is an aggressive disease which can be influenced positively by an immunosuppressive therapy. The patients with no anti-BM antibodies have better prospects.
The authors of the article conclude that whenever a sudden deterioration of the renal function occurs in the course of membranous glomerulonephritis, an immediate renal biopsy has to be conducted in order to exclude a potential morphologic complication.
